Tapas for Offspring
The sage Vaisvamitra refers to the
practice of great of austerities (सुतप) to purify oneself before begetting. In the
puranas this is reported with the object of getting noble offspring. He says:
सुतपाव्ने सुता इमे
शुचयो यन्ति वीतये | (1.005.5.1)[1]
(You may) plant desire in
great austerities (सुतपाव्ने), but the offspring of this pure union is controlled by वीतयः, which is an epithet of Visnu. One is reminded here of the puranic tale of the
events relating to the pregnancy and delivery of children of diti.
Practising great austerities (सुतप) desire
(अव्)
planted (न्य) offspring (सुता) this (इमे) pure
union (शुच-यः) controlling (यन्तृ = यन्ति) Visnu (वीतयः = वीतये))
